Fool (If You Think It’s Over)

  • Artist – Album: Chris Rea – Whatever Happened To Benny Santini?

I was thinking of another song this week, but I chose this one instead because of the ridiculous trouble I had in finding it.

Running through previews of some other 70’s songs several months ago on, my thoughts drifted over to Chris Rea’s song Fool (If You Think It’s Over).  No point in finding the original CD, so I went to a greatest-hits compilation to see how it compared to his other songs.

I visited Still So Far to Go-the Best of Chris Rea [Import]:

No way to play tracks on this one. No luck with a preview in the Amazon mp3 section either.  Going back to the import, I found a review of the album that explained that the version of Fool (If You Think It’s Over) on this album wasn’t the original, but the 1988 re-recording:

Immediately, my stomach sank. A few lucky remakes turn out like Peter Jackson’s King Kong; most turn out like Gus Van Sant’s Psycho. So where did this remake fall? Searching around some more, I finally found a snippet of the song to listen to on the Google Play Store:

If this remake was a Jackson, it would be LaToya’s less talented evil doppelganger. With horn-rimmed glasses.  And an overbite.

Why remake it?  Rumor was that he was dissatisfied with the original, and wanted to fix it.  Rumor was also that that reason was a ridiculous cover story for “I, Chris Rea, don’t want to pay royalties with respect to my original recordings, so I’ll make a washed out, whisky-and-thumbtack-gargling copy and sell that on every compilation from now on.”  Great.

Thank goodness for customer reviews.  A few helpful souls pointed me in the right direction, and I found what I was looking for.  If you want to buy this song on CD, you’ll need to pick up this compilation.

Hard to Find 45s on CD, Volume 8: 70’s Pop Classics:

Good luck, and happy listening!
