- Artist – Album: Soundgarden – Down On The Upside
A little story about this one. I used to write for my school newspaper, and sometimes we would get CDs sent to us in the mail by the labels in exchange for a review. Usually they were circular Hail Mary passes from indie labels hoping for underground buzz; even then, we weren’t getting the good stuff because we didn’t have a high-profile rep on the reporting scene, Once in a while, though, we got some top-label product, and we fought over it like dogs on a T-bone.
Out of the blue, we got a copy of Down on the Upside in the mail, and I almost got a neck dislocation from rubbernecking past the inbox desk when it came in. I was already a fan of Soundgarden from Superunknown, and wanted more. I had to fight hard to cover it, but through resolve (and sheer stubbornness) I won it over.
I gave it a great review then, and I still enjoy it immensely now, but its stature has fallen in my mind. The lyrics don’t hold up nearly as well as I remembered, but the feel is still there, and strong as ever. Too bad this was Soundgarden’s last studio album, but it was for the best.
